ABOUT ABOUT
The Modern Maccabee Music Festival
Spreading Contemporary Jewish Culture One Concert at a Time!

The Garage Theatre Group is very proud to present The Modern Maccabee Music Festival on Thursday, October 7th 2010. This very special engagement brings to Teaneck three of the most exciting young bands in the world of Jewish Music for a night of entertainment you won’t soon forget!

Teaneck, NJ’s Garage Theatre Group has often been lauded as the most adventurous and forward thinking theatre company west of the Hudson River. This fall, the GTG will expand the breath of its avant-garde programming to the world of music!

The festival takes it name from the ancient Jewish rebel army (The Maccabees) that would not be silenced when invading forces forbid the practice of Judaism. Under the leadership of Judah Maccabee, they were able to achieve Jewish sovereignty and expand Jewish culture. Like their ancestors before them, these 3 bands have set forth on a path to spread contemporary Jewish culture ‘one concert at a time’!

The 3 acts: Rashanim, Edom and Basya Schechter, are all rising stars from composer John Zorn’s Tzadik Label. In a similar fashion to Zorn’s musical endeavors before them, such as Masada and Bar Kokhba, these bands have sought to assimilate traditional Jewish music with the influences of today’s modern music scene. Thus, these artists belong to a series on Tzadik dubbed “Radical Jewish Music”. In the mission statement, Zorn writes: “The series is an ongoing project. A challenge posed to adventurous musical thinkers. What is jewish music? What is its future?” These bands seek to try to answer those questions.

The Garage Theatre Group is in residence at Fairleigh Dickenson University:
960 River Road, Teaneck, NJ
